It's still nearly 2,000 miles from Las Vegas to High Point, but in another sense the distance is decreasing.

For High Point's furniture market, Las Vegas is getting too close for comfort and needs some pushing back.

The World Market Center in Las Vegas announced Wednesday it will change its schedule of shows from February and July to February and September starting next year. The September date puts the Las Vegas event only one month before the High Point Market's fall show each October. High Point's spring market is in April.

GREENSBORO — Going downtown this weekend?

Budget a little extra time to get from place to place. There will be a lot of extra people around.

N.C. A&T estimates more than 25,000 alumni and Aggies football fans will attend Homecoming events this weekend, and Aggie Fanfest will be the focal point.

Aggie Fanfest will be held today through Sunday at War Memorial Stadium on Yanceyville Street, near the A&T campus.

WINSTON-SALEM -- Wake Forest's offense turned heads. Its defense practically took them off.

Constant harassment of Clemson quarterback Cullen Harper drove the Tigers out of their comfort zone, and the Tigers' running game couldn't bring them back in.

Wake's 12-7 victory Thursday night was probably the best showcase yet of a defense with eight fifth-year starters in the starting 11. Even better, perhaps than a 12-3 win at Florida State last month. In that one, the Seminoles contributed mightily with seven turnovers. The Tigers weren't so generous.

N.C. Court of Appeals Judge Jim Wynn isn't shy about letting colleagues know when he thinks they've gone in the wrong direction.

"Judicial prudence requires us to leave these policy questions to our legislative and executive branches of government. ... Our role is to apply the law, not to make it," he wrote in a dissenting opinion to a ruling issued this summer.

Even when taking the minority position, Wynn commands respect. There may be no more distinguished member of the North Carolina judiciary -- or one who's experienced bigger disappointments.

CONCORD -- Kevin Harvick and Carl Edwards scuffled in the garage Thursday at Lowe's Motor Speedway, continuing a feud that ignited last weekend.

Edwards triggered a 12-car crash at Talladega Superspeedway that collected several title contenders, including Harvick. Afterward, Harvick called Edwards "a pansy" for riding around in the back of the pack for most of the race until his late charge.

Frantic investors, including thousands in the Triad, lost more than their shirts Thursday.

“I think (they) have lost their heads,” said Jonathan Smith, managing partner of Greensboro’s Jonathan Smith & Co. Investment Counsel and a registered investment adviser. “Fear is as contagious as the flu.”

For the week so far, the Dow Jones industrial average is down more than 1,745 points. What has seemed like a bottom each day this week has given way to another sell-off.

RALEIGH -- Perhaps the biggest reason for the Carolina Hurricanes' latest late-season collapse was that Rod Brind'Amour was an observer.

The hobbled Hurricanes captain couldn't lead his team on the ice and instead was stuck looking on from the press box along with Ray Whitney, Matt Cullen and Justin Williams -- all impact players who missed time down the stretch because of injuries.

Those ailments -- and some players possibly returning to the ice too quickly -- helped precipitate Carolina's slide from the Southeast Division lead and out of the playoffs.

I got an e-mail from a reader the other day after I wrote a column saying Sarah Palin had neither the national nor international experience to be a heartbeat away from becoming president.

The reader adamantly disagreed. "Sarah Palin is a fine Christian woman," the reader wrote, implying that being a Christian was qualification enough.

CHARLOTTE -- When Dwayne Jarrett left Southern California with a slew of school receiving records, few would have imagined his biggest honor early in his second NFL season would be getting voted player of the week -- of the scout team.

But the way Jarrett acted and performed in simulating the opposition in practice last week -- before spending his third straight game on the inactive list -- was a milestone in his rocky maturation process.

"To watch him run and participate and not sulk was one of the most satisfying things to me," quarterback Jake Delhomme said.

After watching the presidential and vice presidential debates, I've concluded that it doesn't matter whether they're being grilled by a media star, an audience of political buffs or a fifth-grade C student; we're going to get the same answers every time.

That's because the candidates are schooled to answer the questions they want to be asked, and not necessarily the questions they are asked.

Charlie Collicutt can’t even get a bathroom break.

As deputy director at the Guilford County Board of Elections, he has been too busy this week as voters register right down to the deadline: 5 p.m. today.

“It’s been wild here,” Collicutt said Thursday morning. “Anyone who wants to vote on Election Day, or vote absentee by mail, has to be registered by (today). This morning the phones wouldn’t stop ringing.”

Voters can still register during one-stop early voting — but they must then vote the same day, not on Election Day.

It’s a nice spring day in the year 2025, and you have a 10 a.m. business meeting in downtown Raleigh.

So, you grab a fingerprint-activated car key and set out in your biodiesel coupe for the drive down 12-lane Interstate 40/85, one that takes just as long as it did last century because of relentless congestion.

Maybe not, suggests a study released Thursday by the N.C. Railroad: You could take a commuter train.
